PHISTA Lab Researchers The primary focus of the Lab PHISTA is to apply
information, information technology, and knowledge management to improve public health
practice, education, management and policy. Our previous work has included: |

Our lab has more than 20 peer review publications and 30 national conference papers/presentations in public heath informatics. Future foci of the PHISTA Lab are to extend our previous knowledge in public health informatics, advised by the wisdom of our collaborators, to jointly address emerging areas of importance such as disability informatics, disaster vulnerability, preparedness & response and the reduction of health disparities.

C. Ed Hsu is Director of the PHISTA Lab and Associate Professor of Public Health Informatics, UTHSC-H School of Health Information Sciences. His graduate training was in health management and policy sciences, health informatics and health services organization. Before joining UT-Houston, between 2001-07 he served on the faculty of University of Maryland College Park, MD and University of North Texas Health Science Center at Ft. Worth, TX responsible for public health management information curricula and research. His IT background includes serving as Programmer Analyst for St. Luke's Hospital (now Health Systems), Houston, Texas. |
Ning Shang is Lab manager and researcher in PHISTA Lab, and a PhD student in School of Health Information Sciences, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She has backgrounds in medical information sciences from China Medical University. Her previous experience include being a Medical Editor, Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases in Chinese Medical Association, China. Her research interests are in disease surveillance system, distribution of medical resources, health informatics and spatial analysis. |

Roxana Maffei, MS, RN is a doctoral candidate in health and biomedical informatics at UTHSC, School of Health Information Sciences. She has a Masters of Science Degree in Healthcare Administration with a minor in Health Informatics, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing both from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a registered nurse and has experience in project management, systems analysis, and strategic planning. She is currently working in conjunction with Penn's School of Medicine at the Center of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, (CCEB) on informatics and health disparities. Roxana has published several articles on the subjects of informatics, telehealth, and health information exchange. Her dissertation focuses on increasing patient-physician communication using information technology. |
AnnaMay Chen, MD served as an emergency room physician for more than a decade. She worked for Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital (Hualien, Taiwan) as attending physician in Department of Emergency from September 1996 to December 2007. Dr. Chen earned her medical degree from Yangon, Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). She is developing research expertise in public health informatics, is a research fellow for the PHISTA Lab and will be pursuing an MPH degree in UTSPH. Dr. Chen is managing emergency preparedness and response and Asian American Health projects for PHISTA.

Akom Phosuwan, MS, RN is a doctoral student of SHIS with IT and Nursing background. He has a Master of Science in Information technology and Bachelor Nursing degree from Thailand. He works as a faculty teaching nursing informatics class at Boromarajonani college of Nursing Suphanburi, Thailand. In addition, he is an adjunct faculty teaching Public health informatics at Sirindhorn College of public health Suphanburi. He is interested in open source technology that can be applied to nursing and public health. His previous research was related to a Web-based GIS technology that using for emergency preparedness. |
Ashish Joshi M.D., M.P.H. is a researcher of PHISTA Lab, UTSHIS. He is Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Systems, University of Maryland Baltimore County and also holds an affiliate appointment at the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Baltimore VA. He has a medical degree from India and obtained his Masters in Public Health (majors in Epidemiology and Biostatistics) from Boston University School of Public Health and a certificate in Public health Informatics from University of Maryland, College Park. His research interests are public health informatics, chronic disease management, computer-mediated health education and health outcomes. He has designed and implemented computer mediated health education programs for the veterans and nurses at various VA clinical sites. He is pursuing his Ph.D. in public health informatics from the University of Texas School of Health Information Sciences. |
